A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
